そういうわけで,ישראל の חיפה にある הטכניון という大学に来ています。5月4日の早朝に到着して,今日が5日目。一週間が終わりました。
5 日間さんざんうろうろしたので,הטכניון 周辺の地理もだいぶ分かってきました。町が分かったので,次は system です。電車にも bus にも乗れるようになりました。Bus の乗り換え制度を理解したので移動の効率も良くなった。
僕は海外に来ると必ず現地の現地語−英語−現地語辞書を買うことにしています。Pouch に入る大きさの辞書が必ず売っているので,それを pouch か pocket に押し込んで出かけて,気になる単語を調べます。21世紀なので iPhone の辞書でも良い気がするのですが,僕はこのようにカタチから入る傾向にあります。
その辞書なんですが,実は,火曜日が建国記念日(66周年)なので月曜日と火曜日が全国的にお休みだったので(とはいえ僕は部外者なので研究と時差ぼけ補正をした),ようやく昨日,本屋で辞書を買うことができました。これで,restaurant のかわいい店員に עברית で話しかけることができます。
とは言っても,ישראל の人々は何故かみんな異常に英語が上手い。都会にいる人たちは大体,僕の知る東大生の 8 割よりも上手に英語を喋ることが出来る。研究室の学生も, の非母語話者がいる場合には完全に英語で喋ります。日常会話も,物理の議論もです。そもそも עברית はアフロアジア語属なので,עברית 母語話者にとっては英語(印欧語系)はかなり困難だと思うのですが,とにかく本当に流暢なので,もしかしたらここの人々はみんな大学院を出た非常に優秀な人々なのではないかと疑っています。どうやればこのような素晴らしいことになるのか,ひょっとしたらそれなりの事情があるのかもしれませんが,しかし素晴らしいので日本もそのようにすればいいと思います。
まあそういうわけなので,僕が עברית で話しかけても相手は英語で返事をしてくれます。もちろん עברית で答えられてもどうせ僕は理解できないので,英語で答えてくれた方がありがたいのですが,しかし עברית で答えて欲しい。わがままな旅行者です。
大学で العربية をやったのも役に立ちました。今では宗教の関係で色々ありますが,どちらもアフロアジア語属なので文法が似ている。עברית の文法を勉強してこなかったので,かつての العربية の知識を発掘して会話(のような自己満足)を(かわいい店員相手に)繰り返しています。
どこの国でも,オバチャンは僕に対して親切にしてくれます。若い女性が親切かどうかは国に依りますが,ישראל では親切です。どうやらいい国っぽいです。物価は高いです。豚肉は見当たりません。そういえばこの国では兵役があるので,みんな比較的早くに結婚するっぽいです。女性は結婚すると兵役に行かなくてよくなるっぽいので,特にその傾向が強いっぽいです。
あと,情報技術が(予想通り)相当発達しています。Bus 用の,Suica みたいな card があるのですが,どうやら現金の額を記録するのではなく,買った切符の種類を記憶するらしい。さらに Internet で買った指定席切符をその card に保存できるらしい。異常に発展しています。iPhone の application もあって,地図を数回 tap するだけで,現在地からそこへの最適な bus の乗り方を教えてくれます。操作性抜群です。 תל–אביב でも חיפה でも使えます。素晴らしい。
そういえば תל–אביב では警察官が公園で馬に乗ってました。砂浜がとても綺麗でした。
よく考えると,Suica みたいな電子貨幣ではなくて,回数券のような取り扱いをしている,というのが興味深い。電子貨幣は資本主義を加速させる機能があるけれども,回数券ではそのようなことが起こらない。休日の過ごし方だとか食事の制限だとかを見ても,なんとなく,この国では U.S.A. を中心とする新自由主義的資本主義からは一歩距離を置いているような感じを受けます。
ישראל の人々はとにかく議論が好きです。先日も,「Coffee で眠くなくなるのは physiological な効果か psychological な効果か」という,意味の全く理解できない問題を議論していました。U.K. からの PD が「部屋に 2 人の ישראלים が居るとき,部屋の中には最低でも 3 つの意見がある」という joke を教えてくれました。僕はすかさず「部屋に 2 人の日本人が居るとき,部屋の中には最大でも 1 つの意見しか存在しない」という joke で返しました。

I think, you feel so awkward just because you still don't know how to communicate in English. As you get accustomed to it, it'll become more difficult to communicate in Japanese for sure. BTW, FYI, you mixed up British and American English, which actually doesn't matter if you use the language "privately." Best of luck with your new life!

I agree with you. As you said, I have almost no experience in writing private articles. Private use of my English is only in oral, and most of what I wrote in English are official letters or papers.
Also thank you for pointing out my mixed English. My English is not American nor British, but perhaps is Japanese English flavored by German; some of the mixing is intentional. I hope that I can write pure-American English, and also that my official writings do not have such mixings...
